SCENE BUILDERS: A MONTH LONG ESC VOLUNTEERING PROJECT IN AMARANTE

We participated in the „Scene Builder”an ESC volunteering project in Amarante, Portugal, throughout the month of May. We lived at the *Casa da Juventude*, where we collaboratively developed a theater project centered on the intergenerational communication between children, young people and the elderly. At the same time, we laid the foundations of our group by getting to know one another and learning how to collaborate and work together. This process was facilitated by the guidance of Marcella (our project tutor), through conversations and discussions, as well as activities like surfing, kayaking, games, dancing, and many moments that allowed us to connect as a group on multiple levels. A wonderful, positive, and proactive atmosphere emerged, enabling  everyone to express their existing potential and discover new strengths by stepping out of their comfort zones.

The heart of the project’s development and execution was working with various materials and techniques, trying our hand at storytelling, acting, and learning Portuguese. We acquired new practical and technical skills, enhanced our communication and organizational abilities, while having the opportunity to experiment. We oversaw (and made!) every aspect of the production, from the puppets and set elements to the costumes and music.
All the hard work paid off with the presentation of our show to the audience, whom, to our great pleasure, were deeply engaged and entertained.

Staying at the Amarante Youth Centre was undoubtedly the best way to fully experience this journey: CJ is a special, well-structured, and organized place, the beating heart of the city, that gave us the opportunity to live among the local community, other groups, and staff, sharing many wonderful moments and experiences.
For many of us, this was our first time in Portugal, and it was a wonderful surprise. It is a beautiful country in every aspect, possessing a vibrant and infectious energy while remaining deeply rooted in its traditions. We had the opportunity to visit and explore several cities, and each one revealed something new to us.

This was a unique and special experience; while it left each of us with something different, overall it gave us the chance to step out of our daily routines, try something new, and develop a shared project with a diverse group of people, creating connections that blossomed into wonderful friendships. Through these bonds, we learned a great deal not only about one another but also about ourselves. It allowed us to see the world and our journeys from a new perspective, enriching our personal growth, leaving us with a strong desire to continue on this path and not wanting to say goodbye.
