Relacja:
Within the framework of the European Solidarity Corps, our group of volunteers participated in the short-term volunteering project “Winter of Kindness.” This project became not only a great opportunity to care for those who needed it most, but also to receive care and hospitality from our dear Georgian hosts. Intercultural exchange made this project even more exciting—it was amazing to meet new people from different countries and learn more about their cultures.
For many of us, it was our first-ever volunteering experience, and it exceeded our expectations. Collaborating in a group of creative and vigorous young people on such an important task as helping people in need was a very valuable experience. In preparation for our visits to elderly homes and disability communities, as well as during the visits themselves, we faced and overcame several challenges. The whole process contributed greatly to our personal development, among others by learning how to manage unpredictable situations, plan activities, and share responsibilities. However, none of this would have had the same meaning without the sense of purpose and the real impact of what we were doing, reflected in our interactions with people.
Besides the fun and quality time we spent painting, doing handicrafts, or playing board games together, some conversations, memories, and smiles from our visits will stay with us forever. The most important thing sometimes seemed to be simply our presence—sharing time and space with someone who might feel lonely. Truly unforgettable moments were when we were welcomed with singing, dancing, and feasting. We usually left with feelings of deep empathy, but also sometimes helplessness, accompanied by profound reflection about ourselves and our future.
What gave us hope were the curious and energetic children we met during our visits to shelters and youth centers. The topic of youth education is of particular importance, and we were happy to contribute to it by providing game-based activities and educational workshops. We also enjoyed several workshops ourselves, which emphasized how effective the concepts of non-formal education and the Human Library are.
