Tamuna’s Volunteering Experience in Poland

Testimonial for Tamuna Mzhavanadze’s Volunteering Experience in Poland

Tamuna realised long-term project called Better together in Rybnik. The opportunity was possible thanks to European Solidarity Corps funding.

My name is Tamuna Mzhavanadze, a 23-year-old volunteer from Georgia. I had the privilege of volunteering with FRSP as part of the “Better Together in Rybnik” project at the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy in Poland. This experience was a perfect blend of personal and professional growth, allowing me to combine my background in psychology and teaching with my passion for helping others.

As part of the project, I led interactive English classes for children, using creative and engaging methods to make learning both accessible and enjoyable. It was incredibly rewarding to witness their progress and excitement. I also worked with senior citizens, guiding them through the challenges of learning a new language. These sessions became a unique space where teaching intertwined with sharing life stories, creating heartfelt connections that I will always treasure.

The journey began with on-arrival training in Warsaw, where I met fellow volunteers from around the world. This introduction to Poland was marked by cultural exchanges, shared experiences, and the formation of meaningful friendships. From dancing together to exchanging words in our native languages, these moments enriched my perspective and created a welcoming, inclusive environment.

A key highlight of my experience was the mid-term training in the historic city of Toruń. This charming city, best known as the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, provided an ideal setting to reflect on our volunteering journeys while learning from one another. Walking along the cobblestone streets and exploring the city’s rich history felt like stepping back in time. Local legends, such as the Leaning Tower’s playful relationship with the Vistula River, added a magical touch to the experience. Our group discussions and shared explorations of Toruń strengthened our bonds and left us feeling reinvigorated for the months ahead.

Living in Rybnik allowed me to immerse myself in Polish culture and contribute meaningfully to the local community. The kindness of the people I met, the beauty of the places I explored, and the personal growth I experienced have all left a lasting impact on me.

This journey reinforced my belief in the power of empathy, learning, and connection. It inspired me to continue seeking opportunities to make a positive difference while building bridges across cultures. I am immensely grateful for this incredible experience, which has shaped my outlook and enriched my life in countless ways.

The summary presentation and article was prepared by our volunteer, Tamuna Mzhavanadze, thank you! 🙂
