Teatro Metaphora – Associação de Amigos das Artes is a non- profit association whose purpose is to develop cultural activities for benefit of community’s development and education. Its objectives are to develop social and personal competences of children, youth, and adults by organising local and international projects, camps, training courses, conferences, seminars, consultations, lectures and other educational activities, based on non-formal education principles for kids, youth and adults. Teatro Metaphora strives to contribute to an artistic and cultural program aimed at enhancing the quality of life with meaning, not only entertainment. The organization’s
activities is an essential part of overall strategy for Madeira to be a creative community, and the organization itself a meeting point for innovation and change, aimed at strengthening the excellence of our island. Teatro Metaphora promotes equal opportunities, inclusion, active citizenship and participation of children, youth and adults and creation of various opportunities for them. Our main actions can be grouped in three distinctive segments: 1) producing theatre shows, promotion and participation in cultural activities around various artistic disciplines, contributing thereby to the development and dissemination of cultural heritage; 2) organizing national and international projects, seminars and trainings, under local, national and European programs (Erasmus+); 3) as a result of the past Youth Initiative, we develop a wide range of activities and workshops related to natural heritage, recycling, climate changing, environmental best practices topics.

  • Helping the HO with local or international projects (Green Steps, courses, youth exchanges, info sessions in schools, Eurodesk events,  handcraft workshops and other topics, promotion events, etc);
  • Helping with other local cultural projects such as theatre plays, international dinners, cultural cuisines, etc.;
  • Help in organising and developing non-formal learning programs for the locals and youth;
  • Promotion of volunteering and ESC projects in schools;
  • Organise the volunteer’s own projects and initiatives, etc.;
  • Social media work for project visibility: making the database, videos, websites, newsletters, promotion of the project in social media, blog, Facebook, or other networks.

Our average living standard is nice and comfortable. Volunteers live in a house, each with a private room, and shared bathroom and kitchen which are all very well equipped. The house is in the center of Câmara de Lobos and just a 7 min walk to the office of Teatro Metaphora. The volunteers have all the bills covered, which include internet, cable TV, water and electricity of course. They receive pocket money and money for food. According to previous volunteers the money is sufficient to get enough of good food and good coffee every day. If you buy the food from the market (green market or Pingo Doce supermarkets open from 8am until 10pm) then you will have enough money to eat good healthy meals every day. And the coffee is really cheap in the bars, so you can even afford a coffee per day to mingle with the locals and enjoy the beautiful bay of Câmara de Lobos. The centre of the city is very small so you can walk everywhere, and if you need to reach another point in Câmara de Lobos, then you need to get the Rodoeste bus which are quite frequent. The volunteer will receive monthly 150 euros for pocket money and 120 euros for food.

Overall the crime rate in Madeira is very low. We felt really safe living here and during our stay we didn’t have any bad experiences. There are some “bad” neighbourhoods, as in every city, that people say to avoid, but they are not in the centre or on the way to anything that you might need to go.

EVS Volunteers are covered by an insurance plan specially designed to protect participants in the European Voluntary Service (EVS) during their period of voluntary activity. Cover is offered free of charge to EVS Volunteers. All the volunteers get insurance by Cigna, which is a global health service company. The system works in a way that if something happens, you first pay for your visit in hospital and any pills if
necessary, you keep all the receipts, scan them and submit your claim from your profile at Cigna website, which you will have to create at the start of your project. They will then review your claim and reimburse you the costs you paid 100%.

We are searching for young artisans, with experience in manual work, ready to work in a team, responsible, and open-minded and most of all motivated to work put their hands at work. The EVS volunteers will work on the constructions during the months of March, April, May and June. Their work will consist in collecting the garbage items, cleaning them, preparing them for the decorations and finally making the constructions. In the end, there will assemble the final exhibition.
